Nursing Homes Need Work

By: Seth Hofer

Nursing homes can have problems. This article talks about the problems that I see and how I think that they could be changed. The biggest problem is that the aides are too underpaid. Because they aren’t paid enough, many of the best ones are forced to quit and look for other jobs. I think that maybe administrators shouldn’t make as much money. They need to spread the wealth around to the other staff members too. America needs to rethink its health care system. In England, the government pays nurses directly to take care of people. They don’t worry about Medicaid restrictions.

This is an election year. We need to write to the politicians and let them know how we feel about health care. Since they want to get elected, they will listen to what everyone has to say. If I were in charge of a nursing home, I would make sure that more than enough staff are hired to cover shifts. However, this is not always easy because most people are aren’t paid enough, so it is hard to hire new people. Again, that‘s why I would like to see the government change its ways and put more focus on giving health care workers adequate wages.

It is awful when there aren’t enough aides and nurses. The level of care goes down because the people that are there have to focus on too many things at once. I would try my best to add a few more aides. I would also get a home health care agency contracted to cover when people call off. Willowood Nursing Home, where I live, used to contract with a home health care agency to cover when our staff called off. I really liked that. The same subs came in all the time and those people got to know each resident.

I also like to see volunteers come in that are school kids. Many Medina County Schools have volunteerism clubs. To be in this club, they have to perform a certain number of hours. The kids could do things like help residents write letters, help them turn on the TV and be with them in their rooms. Not only would this give them the experience the need, but it would also take some of the workload off the aides.

In my mind’s eye, I can picture a different kind of living arrangement. For example, I think it’s important to put residents who have similar interests close together. That way, you could have people to talk to. I would also put people with similar disabilities close together. I don’t mean to exclude people, but sometimes it’s better to put people together. For example, there was a lady who lived across the hall from me. She would literally scream all night and I couldn’t sleep. Some living facilities have different wings for Alzheimer’s patients.

I think that there should also be separate homes on the grounds for people who are more independent and can live on their own. I’d make sure that my facility would have a large community room where everyone could gather In the activities room, I’d like to see tables for games.

I realize that all these ideas would take a lot of money and time to put together, but since I live in a nursing home, I know what the needs are. We have to start somewhere. We can’t wait until things go bad. I plan to write a letter to my congressmen to share with them my concerns about nursing homes and health care. If you are also interested in nursing home reform, please share your ideas with me! My e-mail address is listed below.

Browns Stadiums Restrooms Bad

By: Roger Derhammer

I went to a Browns game recently with Bob Young and some other friends. We had fun, but there was one problem. The bathrooms were not accessible. The hallway going in to the bathroom was too narrow for my chair and the bars were behind the toilet.

A good example of an accessible restroom is at Wayne Tech. Wayne Tech is where I go to school. Their lavatories are more accessible to disabled people. The restrooms are better for a person in a wheelchair. For example, they have on grab bars on either side of the toilet, and that makes it easier for me to transfer.

The bars on either side help me to balance myself so that I can use the restroom independently. I think that the Browns front office can learn a lesson from Wayne Tech in how to properly install the grab bars in men’s stalls. I would have thought that the Browns Stadium would have done better.

In My Eyes

In my eyes
You’re beautiful
In my eyes
You’re something special

I didn’t expect in my lifetime
To find a friend as special as you

Because you don’t meet someone, who allows you to know their inner most feelings
But with you it’s different
You’ve allowed me to know the real you
Which people have a tendency to hide

In my eyes
You’re beautiful
In my eyes
You’re something special

I’ve known what a true friend was
Since I’ve been friends with you

The things I like about you are
Your sincere and caring way with everyone around you

In my eyes
You’re beautiful
In my eyes
You’re something special

Windfall Place Is the Place to Be

By: Cindy Mullins

Windfall Place is getting back on its feet again. We’ve been passing out flyers to people in the building and out in the community to let them know that we are going to try to stay open. Our breakfast that we do in the morning is doing very well. However, the lunch crowd is only so-so. We have changed the menu and adjusted the prices.

Patti Ognibene from the Community Department came to help us pass out flyers and menus to the people. Patti was a great help to us! It means a lot. Lets get our business back on track!

How to Deal with Stress

By: Mike Coombes

Many people can get stressed out this time of year. School is beginning again, which can put extra pressure on students. Many adults get stressed at work too. This article will tell you about different ways to manage the stress you have.

The first tip is to make sure you eat a good meal. If your nutrition is bad, your body can get run down. You might become stressed out more easily because you don’t feel well. Try to eat a healthy, balanced diet

The second tip is make sure that you can talk to someone about what’s bothering you. They might be able to help. Also, do some fun things with your friends. Listen to music, go to movies or go shopping. Doing those things can help take your mind off your troubles.

On the other hand, make sure you have time for your self. It is important to get enough time to rest.

I know that each person is different. What helps one person might not help another. However, try different activities and see what works for you.

YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE

By Peter Stoner

This article was originally printed in the Community Advocacy Press, a nationally known self-advocacy magazine.

When I was asked to write this article, I was told I could write about anything. I thought about what I could write that Republicans and Democrats would agree on.

Your right to vote is very precious. Many people fought and died for this right of voting. To say that you won’t vote for one reason or another lessens their sacrifices. In the early part of this century, millions of women took to the streets and some were thrown in jail because they were fighting for the right to vote. When a woman can vote and decides to, she just doesn’t understand what her grandmother went through to win the right to vote FOR HER! Let’s not forget the civil rights movement that allowed African American voters to register in the south. Did the people in that movement fight for nothing? A few years ago in El Salvador, elections were held for the first time in forty years. There was also a civil war going on at the same time. Rather than staying home and not voting, more than ninety percent of the people in that small nation dodged bullets to cast their votes. Some Americans won’t vote because it’s raining on Election Day. These Americans need to put more importance on voting.

In our country, the people own the government. The government does not own the people as in other countries. The government of the United States only works through the consent of the governed. We have no king to fall back on if no one votes. That means you have the right and the duty

to tell the government what to do, and voting is one way of doing that. You and every other American, over eighteen who obeys the laws of our land, have the right to vote on, too.

Your vote may determine whether we have more taxes and more government services, or fewer taxes and a smaller government. This next election in the year 2000, will determine who the next president of the United States will be for the next four and possibly eight years. This, plus more, has to be decided and voted upon by YOU.

If you don’t vote, don’t complain about something the government is or isn’t doing! So get out there, get registered and vote!

School Prayer is an Important Issue

By: Mike Coombes

School prayer is an important issue for me in this next presidential election. I think that prayer should be allowed in schools. In my opinion, the issue is very misunderstood.

I’m not saying that everybody should have to do it, but they should be able to if they want to. I think that some people think school prayer is a bad thing, however it is not something that ever harms anyone. In fact, I think that if more schools allowed prayer, there would be less stress and violence. I hope that if George W. Bush is elected president, he will work on school prayer legislation.

Louis Braille

By: Seth Hofer

Louis Braille was born in 1809 in Coupvrey, France. When he was 3 years old, he was in his father’s leather shop, he saw a bright, shiny tool called an awl. He wanted to play with it, and accidentally it slipped and poked him in the eye. His eye became infected. In those days, there were not very many advancements in medicine yet. For that reason, Louis’ infection spread to the other eye, as well. Louis was completely blind.

Louis yearned to read and write like children his age. However, back then, books for the blind consisted of large raised letters that were very hard to read. Louis was very disappointed. He dreamed to be able to one day read an entire library of books.

When Louis was twelve, he went to the school at the National Institute for the Blind. He was still frustrated at the lack of material he could read. Then, when he was 15, he developed a kind of writing for the blind that was based on a military code French soldiers used, called the Night writing. This writing was small dots on a piece of paper that the soldiers could decipher with their fingers. People should learn Braille instead of being dependent on tapes and voice-activated computers because actual reading helps people retain more information. In addition, technology breaks down sometimes. Louis’ dreams of being able to provide libraries for people who are blind has come true!

New Technology Helps Visually Impaired

There is a new service available that would make Louis Braille very proud. It is called HotBraille. This is a service for friends of people who are blind. They will translate letters into Braille so that your friends will be able to read it. They will also make sure that the letter gets mailed. The service is also totally free. On the HotBraille website, www.hotbraille.com, sighted people can learn what the Braille alphabet looks like. The site shows you how each letters dots are arranged.

For individuals who can’t read Braille, there are other methods that they can use to read. In the Windfall Rock room, we have a program called Shadisoft Speak. A character pops up on our monitor. We can cut and paste text into our character, which is a genie, and he will read it. The man that designed it is Shadi Shalabi. He is a student studying in Nova Scotia. He is currently working towards his Masters Degree in computer engineering.
