Medina Co. Sheriff Candidates
Published October, 2000

Neil Hassinger (R)

“Voters should choose me because of my experience and the proven programs I’ve developed. I came here from the Ohio State Highway Patrol who I consider the finest police agency in the nation and we had the finest training available to us.

“I brought that with me, We’re not only on the road or protecting the people but we are working to lower the recidivism rate in the jail.

“We received recognition for our jail, one of only four in Ohio to be accredited, one of only two in Ohio to receive national recognition. We have more programs than any county jail in Ohio.

“The recidivism rate is starting to lower. Up to now, you see the same individuals coming back. Anyway you look at it, taxpayers are supporting these people when they are here. We’ve got to break into this to make them productive citizens. That’s why we’ve developed programs like anger management and parenting. I also want a better computer class for inmates.

“Our communication system is still lacking and we have to do that. We have to develop simulcast.
“Secondly, I want to continue with more training. Training is essential, it lowers liability. And, third, we want to keep people from coming back to jail.”

Brunswick Hills Police Chief Robert Osiecki (D)

“I believe voters should look at my combination of education and experience. I have a Bachelor’s of Science degree in criminal justice from La Salle College and I’ve graduated from the FBI National Academy’s Police Executive Leadership College.

“Less than 100 individuals in the nation have that training. The program is a certified masters degree training. Plus, there are many other courses I’ve taken over my years in law enforcement.

“I also think my experience as Chief of Police for Brunswick Hills should be considered. I’ve been Police Chief for over 71/2 years now. There’s never been a chief of police run for sheriff of Medina County.

“I want to improve cooperative efforts with area law enforcement, from the local to federal level. I think we should work together so we don’t have duplication of activities.

“I also want to work on enhancing the crime lab at the sheriff’s department and work with other law enforcement agencies to create a mobile crime scene lab for the collection of evidence.

“Finally, I would work and address issues with needs assessment in hiring, retention, personnel and training and address those need accordingly.”
