City
of Medina
Medina City residents will be voting on whether or not to rezone
the property adjacent to Medina General Hospital on East Washington
Street from residential to commercial.
A petition to change the zoning was initiated by some residents
who admit they want to sell their property to a “major medical
group.”
Some in the group have been accused of leading the community to
believe the Cleveland Clinic Foundation was considering the property.
Representatives, however, from the Cleveland Clinic deny any interest
in putting a branch across from Medina’s hospital.
A citizen’s group has formed in opposition to the rezoning proposal.
Medina City residents will also consider the Sunday sale of alcohol
at Drug Mart on Harding Street.
City of Brunswick
There are two charter amendments on the Brunswick City ballot.
Molly Sielatycki was the charter review secretary on the issues
and shared with The Messenger an explanation on both.
“The Charter One Amendment is only clarifying our charter on the
point of suspending rules.
“We went to court with a case and ran into trouble with what we
had worded in the charter on suspending rules.
“We have seven city council members. If the issue passes, it would
take six members of council to vote to suspend the rules.
“If the rules are suspended the ordinance is effective immediately.
“Charter two has to do with city purchases. Right now, if a purchase
if $5,000 or up we have to send it to bid and advertise in the
papers for three weeks. With everything going up in cost, this
is hard to do. The issue would raise the figure to $7,500.”

City of Wadsworth
Mayor Caesar Carrino of the City of Wadsworth recently spoke with
The Messenger to give Wadsworth voters an idea of what to expect
on election day.
Rezoning on Reimer?
Three issues face Wadsworth voters, one of which could open the
door for large, commercial “box” stores on Reimer Road.
To begin with, there is a zoning referendum which raises the question
of rezoning a piece of property from residential to commercial.
The property is on Reimer Road, near Clarks Corners (Route 94
intersection), north of the city.
According to Carrino, between 700 and 800 residents carried a
petition to change the zoning to accommodate a developer who would
like to use the property to put in 220,000 square feet of box
stores. Carrino says this is the equivalent of five football fields.
“The city has not taken a stance on the issue,” Carrino says,
“one way or the other. The old city council approved the rezoning
or referendum. If the issue is overturned and council agrees to
pursue a zoning change, they would have to start from square one.”
Since the debate began, says Carrino, developers have changed
hands and he is unsure, at this point, who is set to use the property.
The proposed stores have not been made public.
Council Terms
At present, Wadsworth City Council members hold terms of two years
each.
Council voted unanimously to ask voters whether the terms should
be raised to four years.
If the issue passes, four-year-council-terms would begin with
council members who are voted in the next election.
Then, only at-large council members would be eligible for four-year-terms.
Other, future, council members would be eligible afterwards at
staggered times to avoid having all council members with identical
terms.
Another issue up for vote is whether the President of Wadsworth
City Council should have a 4-year-term. Two council members
have publicly opposed the issue.
